Dr. John Perkins
Associate Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Butler University, received funding for the research and development of a new curriculum entitled “Cultural Competency and Peacebuilding through Choral Singing,” which aimed to use choral music as a conduit to create transformative cultural encounters for students by connecting them to choirs in the UAE and Brazil through modern web-based technology.
On April 17th, 2016, Desmond Tutu Center Tutu Fellow, Dr. John Perkins, Associate Director of Choral Activities and an Assistant Professor of Music at Butler University presented, “Deadline for Choral Peacebuilding” at the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts. The performance was the culmination of the “Peacebuilding Through Choral Singing” class taught by Perkins. Guest artists Ysaÿe Barnwell (formerly of Sweet Honey in the Rock), JiHAE (New York City pop artist led a call to peacebuilding through song joined by Butler choirs, Nassim Al Saba Choir (United Arab Emirates), São Vicente a Capella (Brazil) via video, and local high school choirs.
