Jamela is a student at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. She is an advocate for artistic expression as a means for communication, especially in writing and poetry. Jamela has helped paint a mural under an Indianapolis bridge, participated in Rivoli Labyrinth local garden, read to and tutored children including those with disabilities and hosted an “I Am Change” social justice event with fellow Peace Learning Center Social Justice Leadership Camp students.
Project idea: Jamela’s goal is to develop and lead workshops about inequality (racial, gender, privilege/intersectionality) issues facing Indianapolis. She would like to lead this workshop in two elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. She hopes to empower youth to find their own voices using poetry as one outlet which allows them to express what they see as issues, and be encouraged to tackle issues from their own valuable perspectives.
